Days of Rainbow 2021 Charity Update
Days of Rainbow 2021 has drawn to a close, and after an exciting time spent coloring the sky and chasing rainbows, we’re so thrilled to share the impact of the charitable donations you made during the campaign.
Through sales of the Rainbow Poppy item in Sky, our community raised $794,420 dollars for charitable organizations championing diversity, equality, and global unity.
With the donations you all provided, these two organizations will be able to affect positive change on the lives of marginalized communities all over the world.
About Global Fund for Women
Global Fund for Women envisions a world where movements for gender justice have transformed power and privilege for a few into equity and equality for all. We fund bold, ambitious, and expansive gender justice movements to create meaningful change that will last beyond our lifetimes. Last year, Global Fund for Women granted over $9.8 million to 318 organizations in 79 countries around the world. Our support helps shift power into the hands of women, girls, and gender non-conforming people on the frontlines of gender justice movements. By shifting power and resources, we aim to fuel rising people power globally to increase impact and accelerate change.
How Will Your Donation Help?
“We are incredibly excited to partner with thatgamecompany and their community to build support of grassroots gender justice leadership, including young women who are leading transformational change in our Adolescent Girls Advisory Council and beyond, and our powerful local partners across Asia,” said Latanya Mapp Frett, President and CEO of Global Fund for Women.
“Last year, approximately 20% of our grantmaking went towards our grantee partners in Asia-Pacific fueling gender justice movements in the region. Some examples of our partners' work include, creating human rights networks, providing resources to support the capacity of young women and activists to ensure their voices and leadership are at the heart of social justice agendas, promoting young women leaders to participate in local, national, and international forums, and women and girl's empowerment through capacity building, entrepreneurship, and sustainable agricultural development.“
“In line with our commitment to intergenerational feminism and putting decision-making power in the hands of girls and young women, we launched our Adolescent Girls Advisory Council. The Council is driving key strategic decisions across our organization including how to redistribute funds and other resources through our grantmaking. These young activists are finding, funding, and amplifying young feminist groups.”
About The Trevor Project
The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning) young people. The organization works to save young lives by providing support through free and confidential suicide prevention and crisis intervention programs on platforms where young people spend their time: our 24/7 phone lifeline, chat, and text. They also run TrevorSpace, the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth, and operate innovative education, research, and advocacy programs.
How Will Your Donation Help?
1.8 million LGBTQ youth consider suicide every year in the United States alone. They are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers, but LGBTQ youth who reported who reported having at least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt. That’s where your support comes in.
Your donation will fund the training of 175 crisis intervention volunteers to step in and provide a lifeline to at-risk youth. Over the next year these volunteers will serve 17,500 crisis contacts, saving countless lives.
"We're so honored to receive this generous donation from Sky, which shares our values of building a future of equality and freedom from discrimniation," said Shira Kogan, Director of Corporate Development at The Trevor Project. "Beyond the invaluable financial support to help expand our life-saving services, they're also sending such an important message to young people in the gaming community. Our research shows that more than half of youth said brands who support the LGBTQ community positively impact how they feel about being LGBTQ, while 'playing video games' and 'finding community online' are frequently cited by LGBTQ youth as the top ways they find strength and joy."
The above charities will each receive $397,210 on behalf of the Sky community to further their programs supporting diversity, equality, and global unity.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to all of you who made these donations possible. While our primary goal is always to create an engaging, emotionally resonant experience that brings players from all walks of life together in the spirit of fun and fellowship, we also hope that Sky can be a means to bring love and light to the world beyond the game.
We also recognize that we need to do a better job with future charity events of being transparent about partner organizations. We’re proud of the work that’s been done up to this point and all the good it’s brought, but we also understand that we have not been as transparent as we need to be. Going forward, all charity events will have partners fully disclosed before going live.
In the following months you can expect follow-up posts with more detail on the specific projects that these donations made happen. We’ll also have more soon on the very real impact your donations during Days of Nature had on efforts to clean up the world’s oceans, so please keep an eye on our official social media channels for more information.
